bagMUSTER set to tackle plastic waste

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic, predominantly used in packaging, is a significant source of agricultural waste. Without a viable collection and recycling program, LDPE bags often end up in landfills, are disposed of in environmentally harmful ways, or remain as on-farm waste.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic, predominantly used in packaging, is a significant source of agricultural waste. Without a viable collection and recycling program, LDPE bags often end up in landfills, are disposed of in environmentally harmful ways, or remain as on-farm waste.

The plant science industry recognises packaging for products like pesticides and seeds significantly contributes to agriculture’s plastic waste problem.

In response, CropLife Australia (CropLife) and the Australia Seed Federation (ASF) have partnered to develop and deliver bagMUSTER, Australia’s first not-for-profit collection and recycling program for single-use agricultural bags.

While the plant science industry has long supported the collection and recycling of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) chemical drums via drumMUSTER, the technology to recycle LDPE bags has been limited.

However, the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, particularly within farming communities has driven the need for a viable solution.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic, predominantly used in packaging, is a significant source of agricultural waste.

bagMUSTER, a product stewardship program run by CropLife’s not-for-profit stewardship subsidiary, Agsafe, is dedicated to the responsible disposal and recycling of single-use agricultural plastic bags. This program addresses the pressing need for sustainable solutions in the agricultural sector.

By providing a practical means for collecting and recycling these bags, bagMUSTER helps prevent environmental pollution and promotes sustainable practices, moving the industry closer to a circular economy.

The initiative has received overwhelming support from stakeholders across the supply chain, reflecting the widespread demand for such a program.

The bagMUSTER program accepts any agricultural input/product bags distributed through the retail and farm supply chain. This includes bags for granulated crop protection products, fertiliser, seed, grain (excluding silo bags), stock feed, and pet food, typically ranging from 25kg to over 1,200kg bulk bags.

bagMUSTER will reduce plastic waste by recycling single-use agricultural bags, when the program gets underway.

The bagMUSTER program offers several significant benefits particularly in terms of environmental sustainability, economic impact, and industry leadership.

  • Reduction in agricultural plastic waste: bagMUSTER reduces plastic waste by recycling single-use agricultural bags, promoting sustainable practices, and decreasing landfill and environmental contamination.
  • Prevention of pollution: bagMUSTER’s recycling efforts prevent soil and water pollution, protecting ecosystems and ensuring safer farming practices across Australia.
  • Support for circular economy: bagMUSTER promotes Australia’s circular economy by recycling agricultural plastic waste, aligning with national sustainability goals.
  • Industry leadership and awareness: bagMUSTER positions agriculture as a sustainability leader, educating stakeholders on recycling and responsible waste management.
  • Compliance with environmental regulations: bagMUSTER assists agricultural businesses in meeting environmental regulations and enhancing corporate responsibility. Our detailed reporting helps retailers with compliance and sustainability documentation.
  • Sustainability credentials and food safety: Partnering with bagMUSTER strengthens sustainability credentials and provides certificates for growers, supporting food safety QA requirements.

Manufacturers and retailers interested in participating in the bagMUSTER program are encouraged to contact Agsafe.

We are currently offering foundational partnership that provides exclusive benefits.

With the program set to launch early next year, we are in the final stages of organising the logistics and operational details. Stay tuned for more updates.
